Lonigan Gilbert is a multidisciplinary artist originally from Fisher River Cree Nation, Treaty 5 territory in Manitoba. Gilbert grew up in Winnipeg and has been creating art from a young age, taking classes at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in everything from painting to animation. He also explored muralism as well as theatre design, acting and even stained glass. More recently, Gilbert has been living in Treaty 6 in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton), working at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Since moving to Edmonton, Gilbert has primarily been painting, creating more than 300 artworks in just a few years. His work is a mix of observations and lived experiences. His pieces reference imagery and phrases from pop culture, advertising and global politics. His exhibition Transmission, at Art Gallery of St. Albert in 2022, confronted the viewer with a no-hold-barred, brutally honest approach to visual communication, tackling difficult subjects with a wry sense of humour.
