Gerald Delorme is a self-taught First Nations artist, who works primarily in graphite and watercolour. His work often features local birds and wildlife as well as different aspects of Indigenous art. He looks to capture the beauty of nature as well as providing a tie to his own history and the lost history of the original peoples of Turtle Island. Delorme’s family has a long history in the St. Albert area with his ancestor Pierre Delorme assisting as a guide and rescuer among other aspects of daily life for Father Lacombe and many others. Delorme has strived to have his ancestor’s role in St. Albert’s history acknowledged much in the same way that he has depicted the Totem Poles of the North West coast in order to acknowledge these artifacts and the peoples and cultures they reflect. One such reflection was a Band called the Edmonton Stragglers which Delorme’s family were a large part of. They helped the settlers of St. Albert to become productive members of society.
