Works of Alex Janvier from the Collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts

Alex Janvier, a Denesuline from Cold Lake First Nations, Treaty Six territory, is one of Alberta’s most well-known and highly regarded artists. A member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Incorporated (PNIAI), also known as the Indian Group of Seven, he is recognized as a pioneer in Canadian Indigenous Art. Janvier’s work is bold and energetic, with canvases that celebrate Indigenous culture and landscape with bright colour and swirling composition. This distinctive, curvilineal abstract style has characterized his career and set him apart from his peers.

Janvier ‘s art is represented in numerous public and private collections. He has also had countless large-scale and high-profile public commissions, notably a mosaic entitled “Tsa Tsa Ke K’e: Iron Foot Place”, measuring forty-five feet in diameter, which was installed in Ford Hall adjoining Rogers Place, Edmonton, when the arena opened in September, 2016.

As part of the Works of Alex Janvier from the Collection of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts exhibition at Art Gallery of St. Albert, we are showcasing three works that Janvier has created over his fifty-year career from 1975, 1994 and 2004, respectively.
