Oral Histories and Buffalo Teachings
Gabe runs into the house to greet his grandfather:
Hey Mooshum! My teacher says we’re going on a field trip to see some bison.
Is that right, my boy? That’s exciting. We Métis are forever connected to our buffalo relatives because kayas - long ago, they were very important for so many things. We used to all gather twice a year to hunt them. I heard many stories from my grandparents, my Kokum and Mooshum, who heard it from their elders.

C’est vrai mon garçon? Quelle bonne nouvelle! Nous, les Métis, entretenons des liens éternels avec nos parents lii buflo parce que kayas − il y a longtemps – ils revêtaient une grande importance pour beaucoup de choses. On avait l’habitude de tous se rassembler deux fois par an pour chasser les bisons. Mes grands-parents, ma Kokum et mon Mooshum, m’ont raconté de nombreuses histoires, qui eux les avaient entendus de leurs aînés.
