Mooshum, you said the buffalo nearly dis-appeared? How come?

It was really sad, my boy. Too many people hunted them. There used to be tens of millions, but some settlers hunted them just for fun, or to make room for their cattle to feed on the grass the buffalo ate. Then the farmers put up fences for their cattle. The wide-open plains were chopped up and there was no more land for the buffalo. There was drought too, so they didn’t have enough food. They nearly disappeared completely.

C’est une triste histoire, mon garçon. Trop de gens les ont chassés. Autrefois, on en comptait des dizaines de millions, mais certains colons les chassaient juste pour le plaisir ou pour faire de la place à leur bétail, qui se nourrissait de l’herbe que mangeait lii buflo. Puis les fermiers ont installé des clôtures pour leurs bêtes. Les grandes plaines ouvertes ont été divisées et il n’y avait plus de terres pour lii buflo. Il y a eu des sécheresses aussi, la nourriture a commencé à man-quer. Ces animaux ont presque complè-tement disparu.
