Seven Hills

The hillside below you has, for many years, been a popular place for recreation. In the early years there was a pond at the base of the hill that served as a skating rink. It was filled in when the new schools were built in the 1950s. In the late 1960s, after the demolition of the ‘Brick School’, seven terraces were created on the hill. Local children quickly nicknamed their new surroundings ‘Seven Hills’ and the name has stuck. The hills became a popular tobogganing spot, but due to numerous injuries when sleds became airborne, the city eventually removed the terraces. The hill and park below are still a focal point for sports and community events, like the Canada Day fireworks.

Cette colline a longtemps été populaire pour les activités récréatives et le divertissement. Au début, un petit étang au pied de la colline servait de patinoire. La construction de nouvelles écoles dans les années 50 a nécessité le remplissage de cet étang. Suivant la démolition de « the Brick School » (l’école de briques) à la fin des années 60, sept buttes ont été construites sur la colline. C’est alors que les jeunes l’ont surnommée « Seven Hills » et ce nom s’est maintenu. Cette colline était un endroit populaire pour le toboggan, mais les buttes ont dû être aplaties pour éviter de catapulter les luges dans les airs et de blesser les gens. La colline et le parc restent toujours l’endroit principal pour le sport et les évènements communautaires tels les feux d’artifice de la Fête du Canada.
